Leading Dentists to Educate Attendees About Dental Health—From Oral Cancer to Orthodontics and Aesthetics—at the Free Health Expo on April 20th

WALTHAM, MA—New England’s four leading dental experts specializing in overall dental health, oral cancer, orthodontics and aesthetics will hold the region’s first dental panel discussion catered to the Indian and South Asian population at the upcoming free Health & Wellness Expo 2014 on April 20 at Burlington Marriott Hotel in Burlington, MA.

Dr. Mina Paul, DMD, MPH, who is Chair of the Board of Registration in Dentistry and President-Elect of the American Association of Dental Boards, will moderate and lead the dentist panel at the expo. The three panelists include: Dr. Neela Gandhi, an active member of the American Dental Association, Massachusetts Dental Society (MDS) and a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry; Dr. Amit Lala, President of American Dental Practices, a leading oral care provider in India, who also maintains several private practices in Massachusetts; and Anubha Sacheti, a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist who currently practices in Cambridge and Auburn, MA.

“Oral health is overall health,” said Dr. Gandhi of Rofe Dental Associates. “The condition of your oral health plays a very important role in your overall health. More than 90 per- cent of all systemic (overall) diseases have oral health symptoms. Research shows that poor oral health is a sign of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, premature births, and osteoporosis.”

Dr. Gandhi received her DMD degree from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in 2006. Dr. Gandhi practiced as an associate in Nairobi, Kenya for several years and also worked as a clinical associate in the Craniofacial Pain Center at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. In addition to her clinical practice, she contributes a tremendous time to organized dentistry.

Dr. Gandhi enjoys all aspects of general dentistry, with emphasis on esthetic and cosmetic dentistry and is Invisalign certified. As a dentist, she loves the satisfaction of interacting with her patients, helping them to overcome their fear of dentistry, and seeing them more relaxed and motivated about their treatment.

“By educating you on the association between your oral health and your overall health, you’ll understand that a healthy mouth is connected to a healthier you,” added Dr. Gandhi. “We are going to talk about the different life stages and the healthy habits, concerns and nutrition. The Importance of regular oral care and how regular brushing and flossing and visits to the dentist will not only give you a healthier mouth, but will help maintain an overall healthier you.”

Dr. Amit Lala, President of American Dental Practices, a leading oral care provider in India, who also maintains several private practices in Massachusetts, will talk about orthodontics and aesthetics. “The goal of orthodontic treatment is a beautiful smile and a healthy bite—meaning straight teeth that fits with opposing teeth and look great,” said Dr. Lala. “A good bite makes it easier for you to bite, chew and speak. A beautiful smile always adds to self-esteem, self-confidence and contributes towards career development too. In this competitive world a great smile surely gives you the edge.”

Dr. Lala said treatment in children or teenagers who are still growing may yield results that may not be possible once the face and jaws have completed their growth.

“A healthy bite and good looking smile is as important at all ages. Even though adults are no longer growing, they can also enjoy improvements that come from orthodontic treatment,” Lala said. “Orthodontic treatment is a smart investment in your family, your smile, as well as your dental, physical and emotional health.”

Anubha Sacheti, a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist who currently practices in Cambridge and Auburn, MA, will make a presentation from her book “Happy, Healthy Teeth: A Guide to Children’s Oral Health” and will discuss the importance of Age 1 Dental care with a focus on the needs of the South Asian community.

Sacheti attended Harvard School of Dental Medicine for her DMD and a GPR. Thereafter, she joined Boston Universities Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program. She also practices hospital dentistry at Franciscan Children’s Hospital and St. Vincent’s. In addition to working part time in private practices, she is the Massachusetts State Leader for the Dental Head Start Program and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Public Policy Advocate for Massachusetts. She sits on the Massachusetts State Oral Health Consortium and is a member of the Harvard Odontologic Society. She was named Massachusetts Dental Society’s “Top ten Dentists under Ten” award for dentists having graduated within the last ten years.

The dental panel will be moderated by Dr. Mina Paul. At present, Dr. Paul has just completed her fifth year as Chair of the Board of Registration in Dentistry, has served as Secretary in the past and has been a member of the Board since 2004. Dr Paul also holds numerous positions in the Mass Dental Society as well as many national dental organizations, is a fellow of both the American and International Colleges of Dentistry, and is currently the President Elect of the American Association of Dental Boards.

She is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. She has completed a Fellowship in Geriatrics as well as holds a Masters in Public Health. She is an Associate Professor at the Boston University Graduate School of Dental Medicine and is a guest lecturer at both Tufts and Harvard Dental Schools. In addition to serving as a senior NERB examiner, she also serves on the NERB steering committee. Dr. Paul has maintained a private practice and is the Dental Director of the Greater Roslindale Medical and Dental Center, an independent licensed health center under the aegis of Boston Medical Center.
